Pumas UNAM scored once in a dominating second half to erase the first half goal scored by Toronto FC. forward Peri Marosevic.
The 22 year-old Serbian scored his third goal of the season in the 35th minute mark of the first half. The goal resulted from a cross from Captain Julian De Guzman into the Pumas box and found TFC forward Ryan Johnson who placed a perfect header further into the zone. The ball found striker Danny Kovermans’ foot who passed the ball to Marosevic who right-footed the ball into the right corner past the Pumas goalkeeper to give TFC a 1-0 lead.
Knowing that a win would allow TFC to control their destiny, head coach Aron Winter began the second half by switching to a defensive approach in an attempt to preserve the lead. He substituted striker Danny Kovermans for defender Doneil Henry to give TFC a fifth defender.
This tactic did not pan out as Pumas controlled the second half with several scoring opportunities. In the first six minutes of the second half, Pumas was awarded three corner kicks. On the third corner in the 51st minute, Pumas capitalized when Marco Palacios headed in a corner taken by Erick Vera to tie the game at 1-1.
Following the equalizer, the defending champions of the Primera Division Mexican League continued to apply pressure against TFC. In the 82nd minute, Emilio Orrantia of Pumas stuck a rocket shot that ricocheted off of TFC defender Andy Iro and rattled the right goalpost.
In the four minutes of stoppage time, Pumas had two corner kicks and two free kicks within 20 yards of the TFC goal. Pumas could not capitalize of any of these changes, allowing TFC to hang on for a 1-1 draw.
Teams now receive an extended break from champions league play before concluding the group stage of the CONCACAF play. TFC wraps up this stage in Dallas on October 18th at Pizza Hut Park. With one match to go, TFC remains tied for second place in Group C with 7 points (Pumas UNAM – 8, FC Dallas – 7, Toronto FC – 7, Tauro F.C. – 5).
With FC Dallas losing to Tauro F.C. on September 28, TFC’s has regained control of their destiny on advancing to the next round. The math is simple; a win in their next match against Dallas will guarantee TFC’s advancement. In that scenario, TFC will finish first in the group if the Tauro VS Pumas match results in a Tauro victory or draw. Should Pumas win, TFC will advance as the second place team. Should TFC draw VS Dallas they would fail to advance due to the tiebreaker rules that favour Dallas.
Note: TFC was missing five players due to suspensions and injuries. Torsten Frings, Terry Dunfield and Mikael Yourassowsky were suspended due to yellow card accumulations. Additionally, Joan Plata sat out with a hamstring injury and Eric Avila was ineligible due to his association with Dallas before being traded to TFC.
