Late goal forces TFC to a draw against the Earthquakes

San Jose Earthquakes leading goal scorer Chris Wondolowski scored a late equalizer to negate the first-half goal from Toronto FC forward Eric Avila in a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Avila opened the scoring in the 33rd minute mark of the first half. Despite a slow start, TFC played brilliantly in what may have been the best half played all season. Their exceptional first half was halted when San Jose capitalized on a deep throw-in that was placed perfectly on Bobby Burling’s foot. The ball was then flicked to Wondolowski who right-footed it into the right corner of the net for an 87th minute goal.

In their second and final meeting of the season, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw again, hurting both teams’ chances of reaching the playoffs. With six games left, TFC are eight points out of a playoff spot with six teams ahead of them.

For the third consecutive game, TFC started their backup goalkeeper Milos Kocic in place of Stefan Frei. The 26-year-old Serbian was impressive once again, making two key saves in the second half to preserve the 1-0 lead for most of the second half.

Meanwhile, Kocic’s counterpart, Jon Busch of the Earthquakes had more than a few saves to handle. He was bulldozed by TFC defender, Richard Eckersley in a battle for a loose ball in the 29th minute and laid on the field for a couple of minutes before getting back on his feet. The aggressive play occurred throughout the game, resulting in two yellow card bookings being issued, both to SJ players (Burling in the 31′ and Convey in the 37′) in the first half.

TFC played the first half aggressively but slowed down in the second half in an attempt to preserve the lead. Momentum shifted in the 74th minute when a controversial offside was called on what appeared to be an onside pass and would have given TFC a 2-0 lead. Instead, SJ continued to apply offensive pressure in the final 15 minutes of the game, resulting in several scoring opportunities, including the equalizing goal.

Note: Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held for Jack Layton, whose funeral services were held in Toronto earlier in the day at Roy Thompson Hall. Fans facing the east side of the stadium were able to get a glimpse of an orange-lit CN tower, a special tribute to the late NDP party leader.
