TORONTO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) — The Utah Jazz survived 140-133 in a marathon triple overtime game against the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.
The match was the first triple overtime game of the NBA season. So far, three games have ended after a single overtime and two games needed a second extra period.
The Jazz are no stranger to marathon matches, as they came up short last season on March 26, 2012 against the Atlanta Hawks in a 139-133 game that lasted four-overtime periods.
A game with four-overtime periods ties for the third-longest game in NBA history and the longest in the modern-day shot-clock era.
An overtime period consists of five minutes of extra time and if a team is ahead at the end of the period, the game ends. If the game continues to be tied, additional overtime-periods are played to declare a winner.
Before the 24-second shot clock rule was implemented in 1954, two matches lasted more than four overtimes.
On November 24, 1949, the Syracuse Nationals defeated the Anderson Packers 125-123 in a game that lasted five overtimes (73 minutes). On January 6, 1951, the Indianapolis Olympians defeated the Rochester Royals 75-73 in a game that had six overtimes (78 minutes), the longest in NBA history.
In the NBA’s entirety, nine games have ended after four-overtime periods with the other recent one occurring November 14, 1997 when the Phoenix Suns defeated the Portland Trailblazers 140-139.
Since an overtime period must be played in its entirety, games that reach triple overtime will tie for the 12th longest game in NBA history.
The last time the Raptors experienced such a feat was on March 5, 2011 when they faced-off in London, England against the then New Jersey Nets in a 137-136 loss.
This match was only the second time the Air Canada Centre has hosted a triple overtime match. The previous time occurred on February 23, 2001 in a 119-118 loss against the Sacramento Kings when Vince Carter played a franchise record 63 minutes.
